CALVENZANO CRAGS |
- The Calvenzano Crags are a protected oasis that is destined for the conservation of
the natural habitat, for shelter and protection and reproduction of wild species.
Located within the Monte Radicchio SCI (Site of Community Importance), the Calvenzano
Crag is a protected area as it is an important nesting site for rare diurnal predators,
barn owls and tawny owls. Kestrels, honey-buzzards and buzzards can often be seen
here too, as they nest in nearby areas. During the migration period there are also
a large number of passiforms and migratory birds of prey. The Calenzano Crag, which
is clearly visible from several points along the upper Reno valley, bears witness
to the presence of a hollow that was formed on Miocene sea beds following tectonic
dislocation that occurred during the Burdigalian age (20 million years ago). The unusual
microclimate that is created by the Crag’s favourable exposure allows for the growth
of several species of Holm-oaks (an evergreen oak that is typical of the Mediterranean
area) and which, due to the dark green colour of their leaves, they stand out on the
slopes all year long.
